Earth and Environment
Master

The master Earth and Environment brings together hydrology, meteorology and soil science. As a Wageningen Earth scientist you study our planet, including its atmosphere, at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. You learn about the physical, chemical and biological processes in the Earth system, with a focus on the critical zone: the region where the different compartments (pedosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere) most actively interact.
This critical zone is also the place where natural processes and human needs often clash, leading to a wide range of environmental issues. Water scarcity, soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, pollution of the environment, vulnerability to severe weather and climate change are just a few examples of the challenges that need to be addressed urgently.
Based on field observations, lab experiments and model development you will be able to develop scenarios that describe expected changes. Thus you can have an important role in improving natural resources management and in removing obstacles to sustainable development.
Within the programme your can specalize in Hydrology and Water Resources, Meteorology and Air Quality, Biology and Chemistry of Soil and Water, and Soil Geography and Earth Surface Dynamics.

ECTS
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme of study. Its aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken by mobile students through the transfer of credits. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits are equivalent to the workload of full-time student during one academic year.

Admission
Application requirements
In case that the admissions committee needs additional information about your background in order to reach a decision (and possibly a pre-master's programme), an interview can be part of the admission process.
Sufficient quality of the bachelor's degree as shown by an average unweighted mark of at least 7 (Dutch system) or the international equivalent of the required quality as determined in the International credentials evaluation guideline.
We expect you to have a natural sciences background (physics, chemistry or biology). However, the balance between the specific natural sciences varies per specialisation. A good working knowledge of mathematics and statistics as well as proficiency in the use of IT (information technology) are a prerequisite, since data capturing and analysis, modelling and programming are important skills used during the master’s programme.
In order to properly make an assessment of your background knowledge, interests and ambtions we need a statement of purpose. For us it is particularly improtant to know in which of the four specialisations you are mainly interested.
