The Research Master's in Philosophy familiarises students with one or more sub-areas of philosophy, and offers an excellent opportunity to students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Philosophy.
The programme covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. Both Anglo-Saxon and European philosophy are studied. Students can choose to specialise in one of the following areas:
* Philosophical Tradition in Context
* Critical Cultural Theory
* Philosophy and Public Affairs
* Logic and Language
Students acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan.
The University of Amsterdam's Philosophy programme (research) is the most extensive of its kind in the Netherlands and has the largest student body. The programme is also highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality, and has been voted the best in the Netherlands for several years now in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The Research Master's programme Philosophy is an accredited degree programme. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Philosophy and the title Master of Arts (MA).

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme of study. Its aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken by mobile students through the transfer of credits. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits are equivalent to the workload of full-time student during one academic year.

Admission
Application requirements
The Research Master’s in Philosophy is open for application to students with a university's Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy or a Bachelor’s degree in a programme other than Philosophy from an accredited university, provided that it includes a set of units of study in philosophy accounting for at least 60 ECTS (the equivalent of approximately one year of full-time academic studies) that meets additional requirements.
